Sovereign balance by R. W. Winfield, Birmingham, England, with weights marked with the makers name and the date 1842. The coin plates are retained in the horizontal plane by pendant weights below the beam. Brass, matt gilt with burnished bands and borders, contained in a maroon leather-covered box. Beam length 4,2". There is also a version with suspended plates on cranked hangers !
